QUESTION
  1. Describe what you see. I see a large convenience store. I also see that the store isn't very busy and that there is no one to be seen.
  2. What do you notice first? What I notice first is the lack of people walking on the sidewalks and entering the store.
  3. What other details can you see? I can see that the sign on the store says 50th year of business in Belma. This sign shows that the store has been in business for many years.
  1. Why do you think this image was made?- I think that this image was made to show what convenience stores looked like during the Great Depression.
  2. What can you learn from examining this image? What I can learn from examining this picture is that many people couldn't afford to go stores during this time period. The sign states that the store has been in business for a long time, but clearly the store wasn't very successful when the photo was being taken because of the lack of customers.
  3. What’s missing from this image? People are missing from this image. Normally, on a busy street like this, the sidewalk would be bustling with people. However, there is no one walking the sidewalks and no one entering or exiting the store.
What do you wonder about...
  1. who? I wonder who was the unlucky man who run this store. This man was probably highly successful before this picture was taken due to many years the store was in business, but his business most likely hit a downfall when the depression occured.
  2. when? I wonder when during the depression this photo was taken. I wonder this because it could show when the worst part of the time period occured.
  3. why? I wonder why there aren't many people walking in the streets. This is because even if they couldn't afford to go to the store, there could still be people walking outside. In addition, I am wondering if the people couldn't go to the store because they had little money or if because the store raised its price during the tough times.
